The use of llamas as pack animals dates back centuries, and their strong, sure-footed nature makes them the perfect companions for mountain treks. Mark loves to share stories about his lovable llamas as you hike, so be prepared to make llama friends!

Practical Details

  • Duration: The whole llama hike experience typically lasts about 2 hours. The hike itself is a little over a mile up through the pasture and into the forest.
  • Difficulty: All ages and skill levels are welcome on llama hikes. Please keep in mind that, while this is not a long or strenuous hike, this trek will take you up a hill and can be slick in spots if we have had wet weather. Guests must be able to walk on uneven terrain or be in a carrier (for little ones).
  • What to bring: Be sure to wear comfortable clothing and sturdy walking shoes (no open-toed sandals please!). We suggest wearing layers as the weather in our area can change rapidly. Please bring water and any snacks you may want, so you can focus on enjoying the journey. Don’t forget your phone or camera for those coveted #llamaselfies.
  • Do I get to hike with my own llama? Depending on the size of the group and how the llamas are feeling (yes, llamas can have a bad day too!), Mark tries to provide most hikers with a llama to hike with although we cannot promise this. Each family/group will have 1-2 llamas to share and we do ask that young children share with an adult.
  • Reservations: Llama hikes are popular, so please book your adventure in advance. New for 2024, llama hikes are included in Earthshine’s all-inclusive stays. Book a stay at the lodge and enjoy a llama hike while you are here!

Can’t get enough llamas in your life? Consider a llama birthday party at Earthshine Lodge or a family reunion with a llama experience. We have also hosted llama weddings and llama engagements! So many llamabilities!
