You and up to five other guests will take turns at the anvil\, working one-on-one with our blacksmith as he guides you through heating and hammering a piece of rough steel into a one-of-a-kind\, handcrafted knife you can take home. \nYou’ll learn the skills of knife making with Mo\, Earthshine’s blacksmith and lead program instructor. Mo has twenty years of experience in outdoor education and living history\, and has taught students of all ages. While he directs and demonstrates the techniques you’ll need to complete your knife\, he’ll also share the legends\, lore\, history\, and science behind the craft. \nOnce you’ve formed the rough shape of your knife at the forge\, you’ll head up to Earthshine’s Main Lodge to finish and refine your blade. We’ll provide tools\, instruction\, and\, of course\, a refreshing beverage. We offer a selection of local beers and ciders\, as well as craft sodas and sparkling water. While perfecting your masterpiece\, you can sip and soak in our stunning view overlooking Pisgah National Forest and the Blue Ridge Mountains. \nThis is a beginner’s course\, so no experience is needed and all equipment is provided. Ages 13+ are welcome\, but you must be at least 21 to be served alcohol. Each person participating will take home their own wrought iron knife that can be used as a letter opener or simple spreading utensil. DESCRIPTION:Fireside Writing Retreat\nJanuary 9-11\, 2026\n3 days / 2 nights (additional night available)\nWinter is indeed the perfect time to turn inward: to construct or refurbish our creative scaffolding. It’s also a time for quiet and rest–necessary acts of creative care for any artist. We invite you to join the 6th annual writing retreat at Earthshine Lodge. Our goal with this retreat is to offer a private\, comfortable\, and dedicated space in which to rest\, write\, and be inspired—and a community of creatives to support and encourage writing progress and goals. Join us with work-in-progress or come to create something new\, and plan to be inspired by the crackle of the fire and the icy blue of the winter mountains. \nWe are lucky to have local writer\, Katherine Scott Crawford\, hosting the retreat again this year. Coming off of her 2025 book tour for The Miniaturist’s Assistant\, she will be available to meet with each guests one on one. DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a one-of-a-kind hike in the beautiful Blue Ridge mountains with our friendly llamas! Hikers will learn about our famous llamas’ interesting histories and how to safely handle the animals before heading out on a hike with gorgeous mountaintop views on our private trails. \nThere is at least 1 to 3 lovable llamas per couple/group to share and there’s plenty of time for llama cuddles and\, of course\, llama selfies! This moderate hike is around 1 mile long and does require requires walking uphill. Be sure to dress appropriately and wear good walking shoes! \nCost: $45 per person (For groups 10 people and over\, please ask about a group discount). Children 5 and under are free!\nAvailability: Reservations required.\nDuration: The total experience lasts about an hour and a half\nAges: We welcome all ages on our llama hikes and children 5 and under are free.
